I love scrambler pistols!
Even after the range nerf, they work well in close quarters combat. The head shots are satisfying and rewarding. They can one shot a scout at close range with a head shot, but with the way scouts move that is hard to do. Although pistols have a chance against shotguns, shotguns are still a superior close quarters weapon. The shotgun deals much more damage, but its optimal range is a few meters closer than a pistol's. A pistol gives the user one, possibly two skill shots to the head to stand a chance against a shotgun, but a shotgun can easily one shot any class at close range.
Assault Rifles outclass scrambler pistols in almost every way. This is how it should be. Assault rifles have a clear range advantage, can easily be hip fired, most are fully automatic, and all have higher DPS. Pistols make a great sidearm. Although pistols are not as good as assault rifles, scrambler pistols are good enough to make players who need a close range weapon they can rely on skill into them. Swarms, lasers and snipers all need a great close quarters secondary weapon. An AR user might want to skill into them in case he runs out of ammo or needs to reload.
Pistols look, feel and sound cool too. I like the colors and engraving. I suggested a very slow firing high damage pistol before, but I think that's a bad idea now. I don't want pistols to become overpowered or a weapon of chance. As it stands right now, the semi-auto KLO type can put out higher dps and more shots than the breach. The breach pistol doesn't seem to be able to take on as many enemies at the same time as the KLOs.
You need to put a good number of points into pistols to make them great too. The additional bullet per level in pistol skill is one of the best rewards of any weapon. The small clip of a pistol benefits greatly from the increased number of rounds, not only because you can put out more bullets, but because you have to reload less.
I like pistols a lot right now, and would be fine if nothing changed, but I do have a few suggestions ^_^.
The first is that pistols are much smaller than an AR and other guns, but seems to strafe at the same speed as the other weapons when you aim down the sights. As long as it wouldn't unbalance the game, I'd like it if the strafe speed while you aim down the sights (not normal strafe speed) were increased for pistols. It would provide an additional benefit for aiming. Right now I see so many people hip firing, especially if they are scouts simply because their strafe speed is reduced too much when they aim. A little debuff is fine, but the slowness is >.<.
I'd also like an increase in speed from going hip fire to aiming. Pistols are smaller than other weapons, so it'd make sense that you could bring up the sights faster. I believe the AR's ADS is slower when it's firing than it is if you ADS while not shooting, but I would not like that system for pistols. If the strafe speed is increased the need for a speed increase in ADS for pistols might not be needed. Right now movement speed while aiming with the pistol is too slow to do it effectively, but going from hip fire to ADS is a tad slow too. I have to hip fire more times than I'd like to. I know some may not mind, but I'd love it if pistols remained a weapon of skill rather than chance. The spread of bullets while hip firing a pistol is huge, which is great.
The last suggestion wouldn't have too much use, but it'd be really cool. I'd like it if the passenger (and possibly drivers) of LAVs are able to use a sidearm, like a pistol or SMG. It is clearly much more effective for the driver to run someone over instead of spraying bullets without aiming and driving quickly, but I think it'd be lots of fun. |
